People in Education is now accepting applications for the Rida Institute, a year-long training that prepares educators to facilitate humanizing classrooms.  

We believe that in order to transform our school system, educators must begin by transforming our own practices and design our classrooms to nurture leadership in our students. 

The primary goals of the Rida Institute are to:

  • Connect teachers to their personal purpose in education, exploring why they teach.

  • Increase the resilience of educators, lowering rates of teacher burnout.

  • Provide insight on practices to create more compassionate classrooms.

  • Increase the relevance of classroom content to students’ and teachers’ lives.

  • Create deep relationships that will support educators throughout their career.

We do not want cost to be an obstacle for anyone; we are happy to work with you to make the Institute affordable. The cost for the year-long Institute for individuals is a sliding scale, from $500 to $50. The cost to participate as a representative of an institution is $500. Meals will be provided on all three days of the Rida Institute Retreat and at other events throughout the year.

The Rida Framework

The Rida Framework is the primary planning and evaluation tool that PIE uses to humanize schooling, inspired by the educational theories of Paolo Freire, Jeff Duncan-Andrade, and James and Grace Lee Boggs. Freire, a Brazilian educator and theorist, believed that cycles of critical reflection and action were key to any transformative learning process. From this approach, users of the Rida Framework articulate practices (action) that will result in desired/outlined outcomes within their classrooms, which they will document and evaluate via predetermined metrics (reflection).

Heads up! The Rida Institute is a year long, and we're kicking off in the summer with touch points throughout the year. Here is some of what we’re planning so far:

Rida Institute Professional Development Training

The Rida Institute begins with a three-day intensive retreat taking place July 31st - August 2nd in Detroit. Participants will be trained in PIE’s best practices for curriculum planning and classroom culture-setting. PIE will continue to support participating teachers to reflect and course-correct throughout the year. Here is an overview of the Rida Institute timeline:

Rida Institute Summer Intensive 2018 (July - August) This three-day intensive will introduce teachers to the Rida Framework, one of PIE’s tools for humanizing schooling. This year we’ll have talks by visiting educators (to be named soon!) and we’ll focus on developing unit plans and self-defined metrics by which participants can measure progress towards their goals.

Monthly Meetups Monthly throughout the school year, teachers will have the opportunity to come together to “tune up” their classroom plans and practices. These meetups will take the form of book clubs, lesson planning parties, and more to troubleshoot classroom challenges and share successes.

Classroom Visits and Interviews Every classroom will be observed at least once throughout the school year by PIE staff. We will also conduct interviews with students to assess their perceptions of the classroom. Teachers will reflect on these evaluations and observations during one-on-one meetings to understand what’s working and not working in their classrooms, and adjust their practices accordingly.

People In Education is seeking a Project Coordinator


People In Education is seeking an eight-month contract Project Coordinator to provide general project and administrative support for our Artist In Residency program.  

About the Position:

This position is an eight-month contract for an average of twelve hours per week, based in Detroit, Michigan. The deadline to apply is May 29 at midnight EST. The target start date for this position is June 19, 2018.

Working at PIE is fun, dynamic, and challenging. We are a growing, grassroots project that continues to evolve, and we are seeking candidates who are passionate about their work and excited to contribute.

The Project Coordinator will work with the PIE director in coordinating a team of artists to create media projects that explore ideas and practices around humanizing schooling through PIE’s Artist in Residency program. Position responsibilities include:

Project support

  • Assist PIE Director with project management tasks, including meeting planning and documentation, and facilitating regular communication with partners

  • Research policy and planning on topics for PIE’s AIR projects

  • Coordinate the production of final products

  • Document and archive projects and create write-ups about AIR projects

  • Assist with project evaluations with partners

  • Coordinate project launches and other events

Program support

  • Coordinate open calls for AIR applications

  • Assist PIE director with coordinating artists trainings

  • Conduct outreach on completed and in-development PIE projects to organizations that might use them, particularly educational institutions and community organizations

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking a candidate with an interest in education issues, demonstrated project management skills, and a strong commitment to social justice. The ideal candidate would be outgoing, self-directed, extremely detail-oriented, and able to work in a collaborative environment with a broad range of partners. The candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to conduct basic research.

An interest in design, visual culture, and experience with Adobe Creative Suite software are pluses.

While this is an entry level position, we are looking for someone interested in developing both their own skills and PIE’s organizational capacity.

"Trash Life" Film Premier Wrap-up!

On March 28, 2018 over 90 students, parents, educators, artists and community advocates gathered at Cinema Detroit to celebrate the premier of "Trash Life," a PIE student film about the path and impact of trash in our communities. The film was created by a Boggs School class of first and second graders (The Painted Turtles), their teacher Kelly Rickert and teaching artist Matt Daher, with support from researcher Ever Bussey.

Thanks to everyone who attended  the premier of “Trash Life” and helped to make it such a success! Over 90 students, parents, educators, community advocates, artists, and other education enthusiasts came together to celebrate the film.

And a big thanks to our partners the James and Grace Lee Boggs School, teaching artist Matt Daher and classroom teacher Kelly Rickert who guided The amazing Painted Turtles through the project, Cinema Detroit for hosting us and our donors who made the event possible.

“Trash Life” A PIE Student Film Release: March 28th at Cinema Detroit

Out of sight, out of mind, but not gone forever-- once it leaves our fingertips, how does trash resurface in our lives? Join us at Cinema Detroit on Wednesday March 28th at 5:30pm for the release of "Trash Life," a film by The James and Grace Lee Boggs School students and PIE about where our trash goes.

The screening will include a Q & A with the students and light refreshments. See you there!
