DFS Media Workshop for educators: Stop Motion Video for the Classroom

StopMotion

DFS is working with Co.Open, to bring a 2 week workshop that will share our best practices for using stop motion video production in the classroom.

STOP MOTION VIDEO FOR THE CLASSROOM WORKSHOP

1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. on October 11 & October 18

How can educators use digital media to make a classroom more humanizing? Over the last 3 years Detroit Future Schools has been making media in Detroit k-12 classrooms. In this workshop, participants will explore stop motion video production as a classroom practice for creating a more dynamic learning space. We will make our own stop motion videos and also prepare lesson plans for your classroom that use stop motion video to make your classroom content come to life. We will cover everything from why digital media is such a powerful learning tool, to how to manage a film crew of 30 youth with cameras.

Come with lesson plans and/or content you need to cover. If you have a smartphone and/or any cameras that is a plus but not mandatory. Open to all educators!

Instructor: Nate Mullen

Nate Mullen is Detroit Future Schools project coordinator. Nate is a graduate of Detroit Public Schools and the University of Michigan School of Art and Design. For three years, Nate has worked in classrooms across Detroit and has led student media investigations yielding critical projects which have included everything from stop motion videos about Newton’s Laws to infographics on economic globalization. All of these projects are the result of working closely with teachers and students to integrate digital media into the core curriculum of the classroom.

Detroit Future Schools program offers a new classroom paradigm |DFS featured in Model D

detroit-future-schools-5 Model D Media recently released an excellent piece by David Sands, "Detroit Future Schools program offers a new classroom paradigm". The piece speaks to the history of the work Detroit Future Schools has been doing over the last three years and the impact it has had in the classroom.

Quote From Allie Gross, a DFS teacher from our 2nd year

"I feel like my students gained so much. They really looked forward to the DFS artist coming into the classroom," says Gross. "It really centers upon student-centered learning and students expressing their opinion and backing it up with evidence. Those became key components of my classroom, which I'm very grateful to DFS for introducing to me."

Check the piece out here!

There are also some amazing shots from one of our last days of school at the James and Grace Lee Boggs School by the amazing Marvin Shaouni.
